چکیده

This paper presents a brief summary of classical statistical inference for many commonly-used regression model estimators that are asymptotically normally distributed. The paper covers Wald con…dence intervals and hypothesis tests based on robust standard errors; tests of model adequacy and model diagnostics; family-wise error rates and false discovery rates that control for multiple testing; and bootstrap and other resampling methods. Keywords: inference, m-estimators, robust standard errors, cluster-robust standard errors, diagnostics, multiple tests, multiple comparisons, family-wise error rate, false discovery rate, bootstrap, asymptotic re…nement, jackknife, permutation tests. JEL Classi…cation: C12, C21, C23. Prepared for J. Mullahy and A. Basu (eds.), Health Econometrics, in A.J. Culyer ed., Encyclopedia of Health Economics. Email address: [email protected]

A Conspiracy of Random X and Model Violation against Classical Inference in Linear Regression

Following the econometric literature on model misspecification, we examine statistical inference for linear regression coefficients βj when the predictors are random and the linear model assumptions of first and/or second order are violated: E[Y |X1, ..., Xp] is not linear in the predictors and/or V [Y |X1, ..., Xp] is not constant. Such inference is meaningful if the linear model is seen as a ...

Bootstrap Inference in Econometrics

The astonishing increase in computer performance over the past two decades has made it possible for economists to base many statistical inferences on simulated, or bootstrap, distributions rather than on distributions obtained from asymptotic theory. In this paper, I review some of the basic ideas of bootstrap inference. The paper discusses Monte Carlo tests, several types of bootstrap test, an...

Editors’ introduction: Resampling methods in econometrics

This special issue gathers a collection of articles presenting new advances in the field of resampling methods in econometrics. Both exact (Monte Carlo tests) and improved asymptotic (bootstrap) procedures are studied. A wide array of models and problems are studied: inference on nonlinear models, limited dependent variables, GMM methods, nonparametric regression, time series analysis (unit roo...

Bootstrap Methods in Econometrics

Although it is common to refer to “the bootstrap,” there are actually a great many different bootstrap methods that can be used in econometrics. We emphasize the use of bootstrap methods for inference, particularly hypothesis testing, and we also discuss bootstrap confidence intervals. There are important cases in which bootstrap inference tends to be more accurate than asymptotic inference. Ho...

Inference for Parameters Defined by Moment Inequalities Using Generalized Moment Selection

The topic of this paper is inference in models in which parameters are defined by moment inequalities and/or equalities. The parameters may or may not be identified. This paper introduces a new class of confidence sets and tests based on generalized moment selection (GMS). GMS procedures are shown to have correct asymptotic size in a uniform sense and are shown not to be asymptotically conserva...
